It has been run for the first time in 1896 during the first modern Olympic Games, and is still ending in that same antique stadium)
Why KAEM:   After I bought the book “Great African Adventures” by Jacques Marais, in which around 20 type of activities are covered, I decided to make myself a 10 item “To-do” list, based on the contents of the book, in which the KAEM also features. KAEM will be the sixth item to be ticked-off in October, if all goes well (after having ticked-off scuba-diving; bungee jumping; Kilimanjaro; rock climbing & abseiling, which all also features in the book).

Fastest Marathon Time/When:  I don't really run fast , usual marathon time is 4:25 - long and slow is my favourite way to run! I love to take my time to enjoy the scenery and smell the plumerias.
How many years running:   4 - I started doing 8 mile fun runs 4 years ago, which lead to a year of half marathons, then a year of marathons, then a year of ultra marathons and now an extreme marathon...what next?
Most interesting races:  I've really loved all my ultras : Hilo to Volcano 50k (on the Big island of Hawaii); Run to the Sun 58k up a 10,000ft mountain (on Maui, Hawaii) and the Comrades Marathon (in South Africa)

Why KAEM:   Being outdoors in nature faced with a big challenge; no distractions from the outside world; being flooded with endorphins; time to be in the moment, dig deep, "live deep and suck out all the marrow of life" - these are a few reasons that spring to mind! Plus it's bonus coming back to South Africa and being able to make new friends with other 'crazy' people.

Why KAEM:   This is my 4th one. I finished the first on and crashed on the next 2. So I'm coming back to finish. It's a good race and the people are great to be with.

Why KAEM:   Augrabies inachevé en 2009 à cause d'une blessure à 40km de l'arrivée... j'ai aimé l'epreuve sportive, l'accueil,  l'ambiance et  la geographie du desert et j'aime l'Afrique du Sud / I did not finish KAEM2009 due to an injury 40km from the finish.  I loved the sporting event, hospitality, atmosphere and the desert.  And I love South Africa.
